What Are Habits?
A habit is an action we regularly perform without awareness. For example, if the first thing you do, when you wake up in the morning is watch news or read the newspaper and if you have been doing this repetitively for a long period of time, then that constitutes a habit.
Behaviour Vs Habits
Behaviour essentially is a habit. Your reaction under particular circumstances is called behaviour. Behaviour (manner in which you act) has been formed in essence, by repeating that behaviour (reaction) repeatedly thus forming a habit.
How Do We Form Our Habits?
Habits are formed by repeating an action to a reaction every time. The newspaper example above is one way of forming a habit. But habits are really unconscious actions and can be best described as involuntary. What I mean by that is—for example, when you dress in the morning and use anti-perspirant before putting on your clothes then you do this because it is a habit. Some people put their shirts on first (because it is their habit) and then slap on a deodorant-anti-perspirant.
Can We Change Our Behaviour And Habits?
Of course we can! One of the things people don’t realize is as they age, they change. They change not only in their looks and weight but also in their perception of things. And the moment your perception of a thing changes, you break free from the old habit and form a new one.
Let me explain. My sister when she was in her 20s had a car accident on a Hwy. She was an aggressive driver by nature and blamed the whole unfortunate incident on the weather (it was winter) instead of her aggression. 5 years later, she had a similar accident—but this time, the accident occurred on a shopping mall’s parking lot. So she blamed the other driver for not observing the area around when backing out of a parking spot.
All that blaming however changed when one day in a snow storm a big truck banged her car from behind causing her to smash into another car. She was in her mid 30s then. Strangely enough, all she could remember was smashing into another car. She blamed herself for driving too fast in a snow storm. Later when the cops came, she realized that she was hit first which caused her to smash into another car.
Somehow, her first reaction lingered. And ever since the accident, my sister has become a careful driver. She drives within the speed limit, slows down considerably in bad weather and no longer exudes confidence over her driving.
In short, one incident caused her to change her behaviour instantly. And as time progressed, the less confident driving behaviour has turned into a habit. So now, regardless of who’s to blame, she ensures she does her part and drives less aggressively.
So yes, habits and behaviour can be changed – and at times, instantly!
Self Transformation
If you have decided to change your habits and behaviour then all you need to do is start making a habit of following through on your decisions. Once you form the habit, the behaviour to successful personal transformation will follow.
Start thinking differently, positively and with an attitude that screams success! This post may have taken 30 minutes to write, but the decision to change takes only a moment to commit to. It is that easy. It is this simple.
