Ways to Improve Self Concept

Having the knowledge of one self is very important because we all behave in accordance with our self image. A healthy image of self—attracts good things into our lives much more easily. You must have heard of the saying “Nothing attracts success like success itself!”?

When we believe we are successful, everything we say and do is based on the success principles which only attract more success! When the self image is hurt, then all we attract is what our low self image allows us to. Lack, fear, limitation, jealousy and negativity to name a few are classic symptoms of low self image.

So how does one correct the level of self image? The first step is to talk to yourself and find out what it is that is suppressing your self-worth to bloom. Speaking from personal experience, I always used to list the things that I didn’t like about me and somehow gave them more weight than all the good that is within me.

So the first thing therefore would be to accept one self 100%. This includes all the bad or ugly traits of self that we don’t like. Self concept can improve dramatically if we only increase the level of self acceptance. And we can do this by:

  • Accept self just as you are! (I love this phrase from the movie Bridget Jones Diary). Love what you have and promote your great attributes. Concentrate more on what you have than what you wish you did. Not everyone can be a slinky beauty or a 6-pack sporting Adonis so accept yourself just as you are and build from there!
  • Stop pretending to be that which you are not. Who are you trying to deceive anyway? The only person getting hurt from your deceits is you. So stop it!
  • Learn to love yourself. Make time to find the person inside you and enjoy the experience of falling in love with that person. Think of some of the attributes you love about other people and see if you can create the same attributes in your life. This will only help you fall deeply in love with yourself.
  • Start being selfish. While you are busy improving lives of others around you—and I am sure they are very important to you—but you are neglecting the one person without whom you would cease existing. So take care of yourself first and then worry about your family and friends! Please be responsible with this advice.
  • Eliminate guilt from your life. You are entitled to long bubble baths. You are entitled to a night out with friends. You are entitled to give yourself a little “me” time every day (yes every day!). Stop beating yourself for taking time to enjoy little pleasures. Enjoy yourself – guilt free. This will only enhance your mood and will help brighten your personality!
  • Squash negative feelings, negative self talk from your life. You should get rid of every limiting belief and habit out of your life and replace them with positive and empowering ones.
  • Learn to use your inner compass! Get to know your inner self. Listen to your heart. It’s a great tool we humans have but very few of us maximize its use.
