Low Calorie Snacks

Ever since I gave up my nightly ice cream I have been looking for satiating alternatives that not only satisfy my sugar craving but also something that is healthy.

Healthy these days is all that—which is fat free, sugar free and well calorie free. Apart from clear flavoured water, not much comes with the criteria so I had to settle for something either low in fat, low in sugar or low in calories.

Here are a couple of snacks I found and my favourite—Astro Fat Free Yogurt—contains only 40 calories also comes with 7 essential nutrients and is allowed in almost all diets out there (Atkins allows it after the induction period).

Astro Fat Free - better choiceHere is a list of some excellent snack choices. Remember, not every snack free of all three ingredients so in some cases, there is fat and is some there is sugar but in all cases, the calories are 100 or less per serving!

  • Astro Fat Free Yogurt (only 40 calories!!)
  • 1 cup berries - blueberries, strawberries etc., (80 calories)
  • 1 boiled egg (76 calories)
  • 1 cup coleslaw, 1 tblspn craisins and 1 teaspoon choice of low calorie salad dressing (90 calories)
  • Kraft’s fat free and sugar free instant pudding (only 35 calories!!)
  • Chapman’s frozen yogurt (sooo creamy!! - 100 calories)
  • Quarter cup Chick Peas or any canned vegetable (rinse to be rid of excess sodium. Less than100)
  • 0.5 cup cottage cheese with 2 tblsnp canned sweet corn (less than 100 calories)
  • 0.5 cup instant oatmeal - any flavour (less than 100 calories)
  • Strips of 1 whole pepper (red, green or yellow)
  • Fruit smoothie - use flavoured water instead of milk or juice.
  • Protein recovery drink - there are plenty out there all under 100 calories - go crazy!

The above are some great choices but remember like everything else, these too can be bad for you when you eat them every day. As Dr. Michael F. Roizen and Dr. Mehmet C. Oz say—stay away from anything hydrogenated and anything that has anything that ends with ‘ose‘!
